RE: wich is better, VISUAL BASIC..POWERBUILDER..etc

VB is much hard to program for field validation than it is in 4gl. You can easily call a 4gl program to access another 4gl program. You can also pass data from 4gl to Windows products, Excel, Word, etc. Dynamic 4gl is a GUI based front end. -----Original Message----- From: rfurdzik@paulweiss.com [mailto:rfurdzik@paulweiss.com] Sent: Monday, October 19, 1998 4:53 PM To: MikeG@red-man.com Cc: informix-list@iiug.org Subject: Re: wich is better, VISUAL BASIC..POWERBUILDER..etc I do not agree with your opinion. If you need to use GUI like Windows and you have 4GL programs in background, you still need to call them somehow, then you have configuration problems, unless you give users character mode only. Setting Informix-Connect for example is not very complicated and it needs to be done only once. Using VB is more generic than 4GL, your program can be easily changed to work on different platform and more people know how to write in VB than 4GL. VB is more popular and easy than 4GL, code more understandable for others. And if you worry about performance you can use stored procedures and call them from your VB application. Another option can be Java too, it is becoming more and more popular and is platform independent. Java is also OOP and can run in your browser through the Internet. or Intranet. It allows you to write your SQL directly in the code without having to mess around with ODBC and CLI functions. It can be deployed as a thin client and managed from the server. Fat client systems such as VB eventually give you management and configuration problems. If your application requires complex user interaction with precise control over every mouse click you may find these other tools preferable to Dynamic 4GL. -- Peter Lancashire Information Systems Specialist, Bayer plc Eastern Way, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, IP32 7AH, UK Tel: +44-1635-562258, Fax: +44-1635-562281 --- If all else fails, read the instructions and the release notes.
