Andy, if you are using Windows for Workgroups over a LAN, get Microsoft's TCPIP-32 for WfWG. It is a protected-mode NDIS3-compatible TCP/IP imple- mentation providing full WINSOCK functionality. It can also serve as transport protocol for WfWG, so you can run it as the only protocol and eliminate NetBEUI altogether. The nicest thing about it is that you can get it for free from ftp.microsoft.com (/softlib/mslfiles/WFWT32.EXE). The drawback of this is that you can only use it with Windows for Workgroups 3.11, not with plain old Windows 3.1x. It also doesn't provide any support for SLIP or PPP connections. If you need any of these, there are several options: - TRUMPET WINSOCK, a shareware implementation of WINSOCK running over packet drivers. - PC/TCP starting from version 2.2 also provides WINSOCK. - Novell's LAN WorkPlace for DOS (99$ for a site license with protocol stack and WINSOCK.DLL) - or many, many others. Keep in mind that all WINSOCK.DLLs are vendor specific, since they provide the layer between the WINSOCK API and the vendor's implementation of the TCP/IP protocol stack.
