RE: ontape command

Hi,
Can somebody tell me if using ontape you can specify what database
server to load an archive that you have backed up using ontape?
I am assuming that the dbspaces are identical although not in the same
location of course. Is this possible? Because I am looking for a way to
copy one database from one server to another without having to use
dbimport dbexport because this is really slow.
Thanking you in advance.

This will only work if your Informix versions are identical and O/Ss are
similar (ie same OS just slightly different versions).
You can use ontape to transfer an instance in such a situation. Create an
identical onconfig file and have all your chunks set up with the same path
name and same size.
Can be done (and must be done for HDR) but not very versitile or
configurable.

Hi,
no. In general you can't use ontape in the way you want to do this.
With ontape in general, you can create a copy of a server instance
(and if that contains several databases, then you will have to copy
all database, since ontape backs up and restores only instances,
not selected databases), and such a copy will be a rather exact
copy of the instance. That means especially that the physical layout
(i.e. pathnames of chunks) must be exactly the same.
There are several workarounds possible :
If you creat the chunks based on symbolic links (as is strongly
recommended), then only the link names need to be the
same, but they can point to different physical locations on disk ...
With 9.40.UC1 the ontape utility has a new "-rename" option, that
lets you rename chunk path names during the restore. With that,
you can have truly different names (not just same-name-links pointing
elsewhere).
You could check for other utilities besides dbexport/dbimport,
e.g. High Performance Loader which can be quite fast due to
parallelism ...
Regards,
Martin
