(shudder) The only positive thing: it was working on SE without great problems - but it's no 7x24 application and just around 10-20 users max. so there is no great load. >If you are saying that between the transaction start and finish the user is requested to >do something then go back to the application designers and connect them to national grid. It's not a *must* but a *could* and I can't do anything against it now, I would have to rewrite great parts of the main application: my 'ancestors' decided to do a 'begin work', let the user process his order interactively, at least gave him the option to save or abort his work and then do a 'commit' or 'rollback'. To my own surprise this worked over years without causing great problems. I would really like to change this, but I think every programmer knows meetings like the following: (Imagine Dilbert's boss (B) as your opposite) B: I just sold our application to a new customer M: Great ($$$) B: But he won't use Unix - we have to port to NT M: <gulp> B: I'm sure we can do this! M: (he sold the seal already)... hmm, I think Informix ported to NT; and our programming tools should be available, too. B: Hey, everything OK. You got xx weeks to do the port and get our application running. ... Digging through thousands of pages of informix documentation and books... Problems installing informix... Problems with the programming tools... finally the port seems to run and suddenly the tables are blocked... ...solved with the great help of this newsgroup ... M: I finally could solve this row locking problem, now everything seems to run OK B: OK, so we can deliver the next few days... M: But I would really like to change the design of some modules, there could arise problems with... B: Fix it later... BTW here is you next project... M: <sigh> Axel
