IDS on Windows Sanity Check
Posted in 2016
Not a bug report but an opinion poll: a consultant asked whether moving a client's Informix (IDS) installation from HP-UX to Windows is sensible, since his own Windows knowledge was dated. Responses split: Art Kagel strongly advised against it (Windows is a poor server OS, and unlike SQL Server, Informix gets no MS internal tuning), while Andreas Legner and Paul Watson noted many large Windows installs run fine, with upgrades being the main pain, and suggested installing Cygwin. The driver turned out to be a new CEO's preference and cost; Kagel countered that Linux would be cheaper, as Informix licensing is per socket/core. No firm decision is recorded.

Need some "current opinions" of running IDS on Windows. I know that question is way too general, as it depends on many variables in the environment; mem/disk/users/apps/horses/planet alignment, etc. So just looking for stories from the road as I have a client serioulsy considering moving from HPUX to Windows. I already have my own opinion (scaling, administration nightmares, etc.) but have stayed away from Windows on purpose so my knowledge is dated. Some of you may remember in the late 90's when we tried to sell XPS (not IDS) on Windows and the hilarity of that attempt both in the field and the classroom. "How do you make IDS run faster on Windows? Use Unix." - always got a laugh from the crowds. Thanks - Mark Scranton The Mark Scranton Group All Informix ... all the time. mark@markscranton.com

A rather opinionated opinion, I'd assume ;-) There are many, and large, installations on Windows running successfully.=20 With their own set of potential problems, but can be handled. You might be right where someone has the platform choice, where not you=20 still could enjoy your Informix, though or course it's not exactly home=20 land. Then "on Windows" can mean a range of things, from simply running and=20 accepting data, to deep AD integration and more. So again, what would be=20 the reasons for this particular move to Windows? Andreas: I am, admittedly, a highly opinionated individual. I have my preferences. That doesn't mean I don't have a solid base for those opinions and preferences. For example: 1. Informix is the BEST RDBMS and ORDBMS and Hybrid Relational/NoSQL database engine on the planet. 2. Windows is a terrible operating system for serious servers. 3. Unlike SQL Server, Informix is not written by internal MS experts that have access to the OS guys to tweak the OS to make SQL Server run better. Therefore Informix is not the best choice of databases on Windows. If you choose Windows for your OS you should not be running Informix, even given that Informix runs better on Windows than DB2 or Oracle do. 4. Combine 1, 2, & 3 and you get the unavoidable conclusion that if you want the best RDBMS, etc., you need to be running a different OS than Windows. Pure logic. B^) Art Art S. Well Microsoft have ported MS SQL Server to Linux now so perhaps even they now think that Windows isn't the best operating system for a DB Server :-) Neil O'Meara On 18/03/2016 12:23, Paul Watson wrote: > We look after a number of Windows system and in general have no more issues > than Unix. I agree Andreas ... knowing the reason for moving is key here. But so far it's just a "new CEO in the mix that prefers Windows" or simply cost. Don't know just yet. Thanks for the response. Mark
