It's probably too soon to see what this all means. I'm sure there are some legal entanglements that will develop. I love how Red Hat got their nuts kicked on this one. Ballmer joked in the video about Oracle and made it clear that Red Hat was not an option. Even if there is some evil behind the scenes, it really gave SuSE a boost, even though I think SuSE needs to still improve their automatic update. Ubutunu's Debian-based distro is superior to SuSE in a lot of ways, even though as a general rule I'm not that big on Debian-based releases. But Debian-based releases are really improving a lot, and seem to be more of the future than any other distro. I ended up fixing my OpenSuSE installation by wiping it out and installing Kubuntu, and it's been really fantastic. Everything works really well, and its update features are just the best I've ever seen. Which, by the way, thanks for the groklaw link! it took me to this one: http://www.gnewsense.org/Builder/HowToCreateYourOwnGNULinuxDistribution Linux is really getting interesting again!

This may well be the end of SUSE. -- Daniel A. Morgan University of Washington damorgan@x.washington.edu (replace x with u to respond) Puget Sound Oracle Users Group www.psoug.org
