Q: Optimising joins with views in SE, versions 7.12 to 7.23
Posted in 1998
I am about to upgrade and am in the middle of writing a rather complex query involving views. Does anyone know whether the optimiser has been improved to reduce its tendency to create temporary tables when queries involve a join with a view? If not, is there anything else I can do to persuade queries to use the available index paths? I do a weekly UPDATE STATISTICS LOW but this does not do much in SE. Bearing in mind that all the joins are indexed, what might be the optimal level of distribution statistics to use? The data distributions do not change quickly as the rate of data addition is about 20% increase per year. I understand that the best solution to this question is obtainable only by experiment - I'm just after a few clues to reduce the range of experiment required.
