For rebooting:
One of the things Unix does at reboot is run a script called
/etc/startup or something like that. You can put the "oninit" command
in there but doing that unembelished causes all kinds of grief.
Write a shell script that will set INFOMRIXDIR, ONCONFIG, maybe
INFORMIXSERVER. It should also include $INFORMIXDIR/bin in its PATH.
Only then should it execute ONINIT.
There is a habit I developed under Online 4.0: Let the script also sleep
about a minute before actually running oninit. This was because the
other daemon programs initiated by /etc/startup are also scavenging for
pieces of shared memory. I found that Informix, with its huge memory
requirements, seldom wins the scavenger hunt. The habit never went away
and I have not seen any reason to retract this paranoia.
This precaution seems especially correct when you are starting several
OnLine instances. In years of teaching OnLine Admin at Informix, I
found that when several students started their little instances
simultaneously, most failed initially. I got into the habit of having
one person at a time start his (OK, or her.. ;) instance. This way I
was able to get 9 OnLine instances running simultaneously on G-30 with a
paltry 128Mb of main memory.
I never had the issue with shutdown but I recall that /etc/shutdown (a
binary executable on my HP machine) it invokes a script that you can
diddle with. I just don't recall the name of that script.
Anybody want to complete this?
