Upgrade to W3
Posted in 2008
A user asked how to apply the 11.10.FC2W3 patch over an existing FC2W1 installation without reinstalling. Art Kagel advised installing W3 into a separate INFORMIXDIR, copying sqlhosts and ONCONFIG across, shutting the instance down, and repointing the INFORMIXDIR symlink (easy to revert by relinking); the poster confirmed this worked. A follow-up question about restoring a W1 level-0 archive onto the upgraded W3 server produced an "archive data version not compatible" error and failed restore; Kagel said such a restore should work, suggested checking the tape with archecker or contacting IBM, but no resolution is recorded.

Hello, Has any one done the upgradation from IDS 11.10 FC2W1 to IDS 11.10 FC2W3 if yes pls let me know the exact steps to be carried out. I dont want to do a new installation all again,i just want to upgrade it to W3 with the IDS-11.10.FC2W3.tar file that i got. Pls let me know the steps to be followed for applying the W3 over my W1 instance.. do i need the root previledges to carry out this activity or informix login would be enough. I have taken the level 0 of this W1 instance. Regards vikas
The easiest and fastest way is: - create a new INFORMIXDIR to hold the W3 software named something useful like /u/informix.11.10.FC2W3 (bear with me) - install W3 in the new directory - copy the sqlhosts and ONCONFIG file from the W1 install directory to the W3 directory - shutdown the IDS instance(s) using W1 - if you are using a link for INFORMIXDIR in your environment (recommended), change the link to point to the W3 directory, otherwise if the INFORMIXDIR name is generic (like /u/informix) then rename the W1 directory to something specific like /u/informix.11.10.FC2W1 and create a link from the old INFORMIXDIR to the new W3 directory. - Start the instance. DONE! Now if something is not right with the W3 installation there's nothing to uninstall or reinstall, just shutdown the instance, delete the INFORMIXDIR link, relink INFORMIXDIR to the W1 directory, and restart the instance. It will take you less than 2 minutes to revert back to W1 that way. Thanks Mr Kagel !! It worked exactly as you have mentioned.. Regards, vikas
Hello, After upgrading from IDS 11.10 FC2W1 to FC2W3, will the backup of W1 be restored on the W3, i think no it wont work. Is that correct ?? If it wont work then its better i do a level 0 for all the instances after the upgrade. Regards vikas >Thanks Mr Kagel !! >It worked exactly as you have mentioned.. >Regards, >vikas
Archives are usable between minor version and patch releases. It's only between major version releases that you cannot restore an archive from a different version. You're OK. It cannot hurt to take an archive before any upgrade, just paranoid prudence, but still a good idea. However, it's not a requirement. yes Mr Kagel, even i learned the same thing, but dont know why? when i tried to resotre the W3 version with a level 0 from W1 version(same instance before upgrade) i got the following error Archive Tape Information Tape type: Archive Backup Tape Online version: IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.10.FC2W1 Archive date: Wed Jul 2 14:24:14 2008 User id: informix Terminal id: /dev/pts/13 Archive level: 0 Tape device: /usr/informix/tapedev/ Tape blocksize (in k): 32 Tape size (in k): system defined for directory Tape number in series: 1 Backup data version is not compatible with Online version: IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.10.FC2W3 Continue restore? OK, that's a different problem. You were trying to restore an archive from a later version using an earlier version. This is not explicitely supported. It may work and it may not, which is why you were asked if you wanted to continue. However, if you had taken an archive with the W1 release and tried to restore it with the W3 release there would be no problem as that is specifically supported. Sorry but i dont understand, >You were trying to restore an archive from a later version using an earlier >version. >if you had taken an archive with the W1 release and tried to restore it with >the W3 release I have taken a archive when the instance was W1 , then upgraded to W3 and now tried to restore the same archive(W1) on to W3 instance and got the error. vikas. >OK, that's a different problem. OOps misread the output. I take it that you are using onbar, it may just be
that the warning came from the storage manager, not onbar, I don't know.
But it should NOT have failed. Have you tried running archecker on that
tape to see if it is OK or really is damaged? Failing that contact IBM, my
understanding it that the restore should have worked.
