Edward Rosenthal said his HP-UX admin claimed a symbolic link to a raw device panics the OS and asked how to use links instead of direct character device names. Rob Prop advised consulting HP, as this is not normal. allenj reported it works on HP-UX 10.20 and said to link to the character special file, not the block one. Neil Truby doubted the claim.

Our hp unix admin says creating a symbolic link to a raw device causes a
panic in the hp os.
How can i get around this so that i have symbolic links instead of
direct addressing for
the character devices ...

Hi,
I think you should consult HP. This behavior is not normal.
Greetings,

This sure doesn't happen in my HP-UX 10.20.
Something is wrong w/ your OS or your admin.
You want to point the sym link at the character-special file (the one
with "c" as the first char in an ls -l). NOT the one that begins w/ a
"b".
