Re: Senior Oracle DBA now Learning Informix by Request
Posted in 2006
This segment of the thread contains no technical question at all — it is an off-topic flame war about vendor finances. Participants argue over whether IBM should break out Informix IDS revenue separately, with Oracle's side noting Oracle also sells Rdb, TimesTen and Berkeley DB without itemising them, and the IBM/Informix side dismissing those as negligible 'noise'. It degenerates into personal abuse and trolling accusations, plus a challenge to post Informix equivalents of some Oracle PL/SQL code. No technical problem is posed and no resolution is recorded.

Very good. let's see if Safra breaks out new license revenue for each of these today. If she does then, and only then do I see how Oracle can take a moral high road against IBM not breaking out IDS revenues. If there is *any* revenue from these other databases, they would be noise in comparison. It would be akin to having IBM break down all products not just IDS and DB2 licneses, but also CM , II and the ASS-N-TAIL stuff. (including mercator) And I don't think anyone is asking that. Again those who are here to "promote" Oracle, fall flat. With respect to earnings we're talking about core products. With respect to IBM SWG IM, the two core products are IDS and DB2. With respect to Oracle, its Oracle XXx, the ancillary dbs purchased produced neglible revenue. Times Ten was a mercy kill on Larry's part. (Hint: They were on the chopping block for about a year) Again this is noise. Seems that there's some confusion on the importance of double digit growth. To clarify, the analysts expect "double digit" growth from IBM SWG IM pillar as well as this from Oracle. Its when they don't see double digit growth that they get concerned. -G _________________________________________________________________ Get the latest Windows Live Messenger 8.1 Beta version.'Join now. http://ideas.live.com

I live by the rule that before I ask others to do something I make sure I do it myself. I am not asking Oracle to break out their revenues. But Mark appears to be rather interested. So Yes. To get his wish Oracle has to go first. :-) Cheers Serge -- Serge Rielau DB2 Solutions Development IBM Toronto Lab WAIUG Conference http://www.iiug.org/waiug/present/Forum2006/Forum2006.html

I guess if the norm in the industry was to break out the numbers, IBM would do it too. Since it's evidently not, and since the only people who score from it are the competition, I can only assume you're doing your usual lame-arsed job of trolling. -- Bye now, Obnoxio "I don't read newspapers anymore except the local rag which I do weekly to cheer myself trying to see if anyone I hate has been stabbed." -- Horribilis XVI -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by OpenProtect(http://www.openprotect.com), and is believed to be clean.

Writing, as someone did, that PL/SQL is clumsy or clunky or whatever was an invitation for someone to respond. Had the comment included a code example I'd have either not commented or, more likely, agreed with the OP. But just bashing a product as a feel good exercise is an invitation with embroidery. And, just to throw a bit of petrol on the fire, I've yet to see anyone post an Informix equivalent to what I wrote. Although, come to think of it ... I can't remember when I've ever seen anyone in this group post code. Can anyone here write some or do you just use this forum to whine about Oracle and IBM? <g> Ok that was unkind ... I apologize. Personally, I couldn't be arsed to a) downgrade to a T43; b) get your exact spec of tin and c) download IDS to try to find an equivalent piece of code to try and make you feel useful. I have better things to do with my day than perform like a trained seal for Oracle's favourite troll. > Ok that was unkind ... I apologize. I'll slink off into the darkness > of my grotto now. No presents from Santa at my house. Don't apologise. I, for one, don't need your apology. But if you were to fuck off and die, that would be nice.
