The whole idea of RDS is that the p-code is object-portable. The client cannot run a c4gl-complied application without a 4GL runtime. Period. It doesn't matter whether it is an RDS runtime or C4GL runtime. A .4ge executable will look in $INFORMIXDIR/msg for its message catalogs at runtime. If they are not found, it will print an error message and die. You can demonstrate this by unsetting your INFORMIXDIR variable and trying to execute a 4GL program (provided Informix is not installed in /usr/informix, which is the default). : To port applications in (C-compiled) 4GL, the application has to have : been re-compiled with the correct port, which means either your client : (or you) buying a development copy of 4GL for that platform. Or buy a runtime 4GL license for the target machine *if* it has an identical OS. Then it is unnecesary to recompile. The 4GL version numbers do not have to be exactly identical--I have often used programs compiled with 4.0 in a 4.1x environment. This doesn't work for RDS prorams though--they should be compiled and executed from the same RDS version. -- Jeff Sturm jsturm@mail.msen.com
