CDC vs ER
Posted in 2016
User asked about replicating Informix data to Oracle and Informix using CDC, seeking performance comparisons with ER (Enterprise Replication). Responders noted ER is considerably faster, requires no external agents, has lower administrative overhead, supports more data types, and is free. CDC is expensive (per-processor licensing), reliable but network-sensitive and difficult over WAN.

Hi, our customer wants replicate data to oracle and informix server. For oracle wants use CDC and for informix too. Do you have somebody experience with replication over CDC ? 1.informix to oracle and other database system 2.informix to informix. I'm interested also to compare performance between CDC and ER thanks Petr
blockquote, div.yahoo_quoted { margin-left: 0 !important; border-left:1px #715FFA solid !important; padding-left:1ex !important; background-color:white !important; } ER would be considerably faster. It does not require data movement between the capture agent and the source nor between the apply agent and the target. Also ER bypasses most of the SQL layer of the DBMS, CDC can not do that. I should mention also, since ER does not require any external agents, ER does not require nearly as much startup/shutdown coordination between the agents and the server. That means there is much less administrative requirements. The other thing to consider is cost. CDC is expensive. You pay per processor for both source and target while ER is 'free'. I am currently running CDC from IDS 11.7 on Red Hat to SQLServer. It is quite reliable and efficient but not very resilient. I have found it very sensitive to network glitches and almost impossible over a WAN.
