Re: System Halts.

Hi all, It was November last year that I promised various contributors that I'd let them know the outcome. Well, I didn't forget. We've only just done the work. Quick resume of the problem. Intermittent performance problem. The "system" would lock for a while - from a few seconds, upto a couple of minutes - and allow users to do nothing, not even logon. Several contributors spotted our lack of temp spaces, and some offered detailed responses to the questions of uncooked over cooked disks, etc. I never doubted any of the advice, but we've had lots of other things to do with limited resources - the old story. And it was a nuisance rather than a critical issue. Last Friday "our" consultant came in and installed a new HD - separate spindle outside of the RAID - and created four 2GB RAW spaces. I was off Monday. Today I have done my absolute best to create a "system halt." It will come as no surprise to most of you that I failed. Even by running several of the "trigger" reports from several sessions the most I could do - and this was difficult - was to manage to fill the first temp dbspace and get Informix to use the second. And this only by creating a level of stress on our system that normal use never gives it. So, problem solved. Thanks again to all who contributed. Regards, Malcolm Garbett
