There is an option of sockets called keepalive. HP wrote a script,
which I previously posted to this venue, to modify the keepalive
parameters (on an HP platform) to poll the socket for a dead client
and then close the socket connection. The script modifies the running
kernel to set these parameters. I will supply it upon request,
but with the caveat that if you're running other than an HP 9000 with
HP/UX 7.x, 8.x, or 9.x that you consult your OS tech support before
attempting to implement it.
