Inf. SE 4 locked table?!?

Hi, i have a DB with Informix SE 4 in a AIX 4.2 machine with about 10 users. The problem with this DB is that when a user access a big table (about 100000 records) the other users are, locked? The access that a refer is an update to the table. Why are the other users locked when they do a SELECT? Is this machine there are other DB much bigger (Informix SE v4 too) and this problem does not exist! Any help will be much apreciatted. Thanks in advance.
