Informix database couldnot startup
Posted in 2013
A user's Informix server wouldn't start, failing with "shmget: [EEXIST] key ...: shared memory already exists" and "mt_shm_init: can't create resident segment", even after removing the segment with ipcrm. Replies explained that leftover segments persist when processes (dbaccess, onstat, ontape, or a kill -9'd CPU VP) are still attached, and suggested onclean/onshutdown, clearing all segments, changing SERVERNUM, or rebooting. onclean and onshutdown didn't help; the poster resolved it by clearing all remaining shared memory segments, after which the server started.

Hi All, Informix database couldn't startup and giving following error 11:44:25 IBM Informix Dynamic Server Started. 11:44:25 shmget: [EEXIST][17]: key 52584804: shared memory already exists 11:44:25 mt_shm_init: can't create resident segment I have cleared above the process ipcrm and still getting same error thank you very much Regards Baskaran --089e0149396409cf2904e3cc61bb
can you send me the os & Informix version that you have installed Pushpa
while you can use ipcrm to remove the memory you also have to=
remove all process which have attached to the shared memory segment.
If=
there is a stray process (onstat, ontape,...), the memory is still in
u= se and
the operating system will not release the segments.

Hello.
Two great utilities for removing memory segments, are onshutdown and onclean.
I´d suggest onclean first, if you still get issues, I´d suggest a reboot in
your box. Some friends are complaining about these issues, but in most cases
they are related to operational system troubles, not Informix.
Hope it helps.
Regards.

Hi,
This usually happens when you segments are still there even if your
engine has been shut down. If you did a "kill -9" on the main CPU VP,
the engine no longer runs but sometimes the SHM segments are still
there. Sometimes this happens also when a dbaccess process is still
runnning or another application process.
If ipcrm does not help and all of the applications connected are not
there any longer, either you could change the SERVERNUM in the onconfig
file to another unused number (of course this is not the best thing
since you might consume more SHM but allows you to start the engine
quickly without having to reboot the server) and restart the Informix
engine, or reboot your server.
It looks like one of the SHM segments identified by the Key 0x52584804
is still there.

Thank you for all their advice.
I have tried onshutdown.sh and onclean both does not works. Finally, I have
to clear all the memory segments and then start informix able to up

There are other segments. Run onclean to clear them all.
