continous backup on hard disk

I want to backup logical log on hard disk continously. I have created a program that periodically checks the size of the backup file. But what am I to do when the backup file is big enough for backup on tape? Do I loose data when I stop continous backup by killing the process for backup on tape? Or what kind of strategy shall I do to backup the backup file on tape? Thanks in advance Pascal Schaefer
