How does Informix take care of security of data? > Informix manages database, table, and column level security under the keyword "privileges." The details of this mechanism are discussed in the must-read book "Informix Guide to SQL Tutorial" which comes with every product. Additionally, there is a pointer to that manual on page 1-10 of the "Informix-OnLine Dynamic Server Administrator's Guide" (version 7.2, December 1995), and an index entry there under "privileges." Normally at this point I'd recommend Joe Lumbley's book "Informix Database Administrator's Survival Guide", but he doesn't deal with user privs, except to point to the public domain to find ACE reports (which are worth having, IMHO.) Maybe he'll add that in the next release, but you should have his book in the meantime anyway. (ISBN 0-13-124314-4, from Prentice Hall under the Informix Press line. 1995) I've asked the publisher before about international availability but got no response. Email dan_rush@prenhal.com. You can check this group's FAQ for a short opinion piece about this topic at http://www.iiug.org/techinfo/faq/informix.htm (among other places.) It is easy to write shell scripts around the SQL statements which manage users, and a good way to demonstrate your understanding of the GRANT and REVOKE statements. See also information on the system tables systabauth, sysusers, syscolauth, and sysprocauth. That ought to get you started.
