As long as you do not shutdown the server, you will be able to continue working because a "rm" by Unix only deletes the entry in the directory. The I-node (which is the actual file) will be deleted (and ther disk space freed) at the moment when the last process (i.e. Informix) closes it. What I would do (I hope I will never be in this situation as I use raw devices) is: 1) stop users working (maybe by going to the quiescent mode) 2) perform a database backup 3) shut down informix (ouch!) 4) restore the database No responsability whatsoever that it works without problem.
