oracle parallel server & NCR DLM

Dear Colleagues, I have been asked this question and I wish that someone can help me to answer it. There are two NCR machines that are sharing a RAID and grouped togather as a cluster. Each of the two machines will have a DBMS running on it. The two DBMSs will work at the same time, but during any faluires, one of the them (the surviving one) will carry both loads. The person who asked me this question said that this can be accomplished in Oracle using Oracle parallel server, and NCR DLM (Distributed Lock Manager). Is there an Informix eqivalent? Is XPS is a valid choice here? I know that XPS does not support data replication? Can XPS work on servers that are not MPP (Massive Parallel Processors) machines. What other Informix solution we might look into. Thanks in advance for your help. Regards, Amgad Al-Sisi Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

Assuming that the servers on A & B are handling different data then yes XPS is the solution you seek. Either the two servers are co-servers handling subsets of the data for different users or they manage independent databases. In the event that machine B goes offline a replacement server will be started on machine A using the same disks. Applications that were attached to the server on B will need to reconnect and reprepare statements and cursors but the routing to A will be automatic. If rather the two servers are to be replicants and you just want one machine to take the load when the other goes down then ANY Informix server will handle that. You can use either of the replication products (HDR or ER) to maintain the servers in sync unless you want to update data on both servers then you are limited to the more advanced Enterprise Replication which works best in versions 7.31 or later (ie IDS.2000/Foundation.2000 - V9.20). In this case users could be attached to either of both servers and when one went down the applications would reconnect and automatically be routed to the other server. When the down server recovers the replication mechanism will synchronize that server with any updates it missed while offline. Art S. Kagel
