Take a : look at a paper at www.dbintellect.com for real life experience. What is so impressive about that? I have personally loaded 45GB/hr into an SMP Oracle RDBMS. On an MPP box - e.g., an RS/6000 SP - I think I can triple that. : >> >(2) They plan to query that data from about 30 region locations, : >> >having "regional" data (50 GB per month each). Informix does provide connectivity : to DB2/MVS via a DRDA gateway. This would allow you to join the : Informix data with DB2/MVS. The joins/sorts will take place inside : the Informix DSA engine and therefore exploit parallel processing. : The distributed join will never be as fast as a local join. PMJI - I agree with Dave here as far as keeping distributed joins in the engine wherever possible. There is, however, another solution - stick an applications server layer in the middle to act as a traffic cop and client to the two DB servers. This would a) minimize the load on the DB server (minimizing pinging), b) permit greater scalability among the user base, c) permit integration of additional data sources with minimal maintenance and d) implement a simplistic failover mechanism. If you happen to use an RS/6000 as the platform, even with something as constricting as CICS/6000 as the tp monitor (this is not a recommendation, just an example), you will get quite speedy connections to both DB/2 and the RDBMS of choice, since both connections will be more or less 'native'. BTW - I do not work for (or resell) IBM! Never have, never will...
