RETAIN UPDATE LOCKS

Reading the SQL manual (yes I do RTFM!!!) it says "You can use this option to achieve the same locking effects but avoid the overhead of dummy updates or the repeatable read isolation level." Can anyone quantify what the overhead actually is?
