I sometimes use dbexport (to disk or tape) for this purpose (e.g. to
backup daily version of a small database containing some critical
configuration parameters for a large application). However, this method
is rather slow (especially dbimport part - all those index and
constraint builds...)
Also beware of this: dbexport wants exclusive use of a database; in V5
it does not conserve extent sizes, table placement (regarding dbspaces)
and table lock level; it does not work with tapes larger than 2GB (at
least on AIX - the size "wraps over").
If your backup is just protective one (i.e. you will only use it if disk
crashes or somebody drops the database - yes, I have seen it happen :-),
back up dayly, do continuous backup of logs to tape, and, if something
happens, simply restore everything.
