They are much improved, with a better lay out and they cover many things left out of the original manuals, such as optimisation, tuning, etc. Also other areas are explained in much more detail - sizing, etc. Also a couple of new books are available. Have a look at "4GL by Example", this gives methods and sample code for achieving many of the more complicated requirements that developers have. This book is a must for anyone starting out with 4GL and is useful to many longer term developers especially when moving up to 4.1. This is not to say that these books are an answer to all your dreams but they are much, much better.
