Re: Informix v7.24UC6 hangs

Hi Neil,
If you can provide details in your Online logs and AF file output, I would
probably able tell you if your problem was exactly what we had seen in
7.23UC5, which was related to setting of the SHMVIRTSIZE parameter on HP-UX
paltform.
If you are on HP-UX, there is a known problem in 7.2X on HP-UX with the use of
the VIRTUAL shared memory segment. The workaround is to ensure there is only
one such segment used by Informix. Any attempt to acquire any additional
segment at runtime can cause the problem you have described. Use 'onstat -g
seg' command to monitor the usage of such resource (the one belonged to class
V'.
If you have to set this parameter to a big value you must also configure the
kernel parameter shmmax to bigger value in order to accomodate the increase in
value for SHMVIRTSIZE.
To find out how much your user sessions use such resource with command
'onstat - g ses'. From this you can determine what should be the initial
value for SHMVIRTSIZE so that it will never cause new segment allocation at
runtime.
As a guide to your feeling how much you should allocate to such resource, we
have system running with value from 90000 (90 MBytes) to 150 (Mbytes) for such
variable.
Hopes this helps.

Tim Lim
