Remote database connection failed
Posted in 2013
A user editing /etc/services and sqlhosts to reach a remote instance got SQL error -908 (connect to database server failed) from a COBOL app. Advice was that -908 usually means the client host/user isn't trusted by the server's host, and to search past forum posts. The poster fixed the first problem himself, then hit listener error -956 ("Client host or user ... not trusted") on 11.50FC9. Alexandre Marini suggested adding the appropriate entry to /etc/hosts.equiv; the poster replied he had already put the server name in the client's hosts.equiv and it still failed. No resolution is recorded in the thread.

Hello. Could you specify your Informix version, and architecture? 1) What specific changes have you made in your sqlhosts file? 2) If you rollback your changes, does it works fine? Please post your changes, in old/new format of sqlhosts file, so that we could try to help. Regards. Getting a -908 error usually means that your client is not trusted by the server's host. There are lots (hundreds?) of posts and responses about solving this one, so I'm not going to go into it again. Search the forum history! Art Art S. Ok. The description of this error suggests that the client computer or client user is not trusted by the Informix server. Check if your /etc/hosts.equiv file has an entry for the Informix server, in you client machine. That should fix your issue. Hope it helps. Regards. whx003n - This is the client server host name

an entry for the client machine.

Ok please make sure (double check) your /etc/hosts.equiv (I don´t know if you
printed the correct file from client side).
I have an 11.50 here, and it works just fine.
You might do a simple test:
1) Include only a plus sign (+) at the file. If it works, that´s the right
file (but don´t let this in production, it auths any external connection)!
2) in case the previous test worked, you might correct you machine name, do a
ping test, and use the correct DNS name for your client/serve machines,
instead of a simple name.
That should fix your issues.
Regards.

-956 Client client-name or user is not trusted by the database server. The desired database server does not consider the client computer or your user ID trusted. Ask the system administrator to include the client computer as a trusted host and/or your user id as a trusted user in the /etc/hosts.equiv file on the server computer or in the .rhosts file in your home directory on the server computer. See the UNIX manual pages on HOSTS.EQUIV(5) for more information. Alternatively, you can explicitly specify your user name and password in the USER clause of a CONNECT statement or in the .netrc file in your home directory on the client computer. See the IBM Informix Guide to SQL: Syntax for information on the CONNECT statement, and the UNIX manual pages regarding NETRC(5) for information on the .netrc file. This message appears with Version 6.0 and later. Art Art S. you could be right but the error says
cm172895@whxd003madcs-new.sing.micron.com
is not trusted and the FQDN is not in the hosts.equiv - a very simple test

Agreed...
If the error is:
cm172895@whxd003madcs-new.sing.micron.com[whx003n]:
Do the following steps:
1- add this to /etc/hosts.equiv or ~cm172895/.rhosts:
whxd003madcs-new.sing.micron.com <cm172895@whxd003madcs-new.sing.micron.com>
cm172895 <cm172895@whxd003madcs-new.sing.micron.com>
2- If the above doesn't work add the following to the same file (without
removing the previous):
whx003n cm172895 <cm172895@whxd003madcs-new.sing.micron.com>
Please tell us the result.
The ping test doesn't prove anything... It shows the server can resolve the
FQDMN, but what matters is how the server REVERSE DNS the client IP
address. If it's to a fully qualified name then that's what you need to add.
If it only works with both entries... than it's "normal"... But it's a long
story. I'm not sure if there is any full fixpack version where that
happens... but it's highly likely there is...
Regards
