You can use 'dd' to make sure the disk is readable. Pipe that into 'od -x' and look to see that the pagenumbers and timestamps make sense (the first 2 pages of a chunk are not formatted, the first word of each 2K page is the page's physical address, second word is header timestamp and should match the last word on each page). Remember that od -x still shows offsets in octal. If you are using a volume manager use its utilities to verify that the disk stripe/mirror/RAID sets are still properly constructed. Check the system logs (usually /var/adm/messages) to see if there are any complaints about bad drives, power supplies or controllers. Art S. Kagel
