Use 'dbaccess <dbname> -' to get a command line prompt (like sqlplus),

Not quite. The dbaccess manual and SQL Syntax manual has the goods for your
first question, but certainly investigate the sysmaster database tables and
the sys* tables in the individual user databases. There's tons of useful
stuff in these, and sysmaster is almost indispensable for formatting
home grown performance and monitoring tools.
