Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
Josef Albert saw old logical log backups not being removed on 14.10.FC7 on Windows with ontape, then found his own script was deleting them. Art Kagel advised the archive script should age out log backups older than the oldest retained archive. ZhiWei Cui said ontape cannot delete them itself; Art agreed and said the launching script can do it. Solved.

Hi,
i've set up a logical log backup with ids 14.10 fc7 (windows) like i did it with all versions before:
onconfig:
LTAPEDEV=PATH_TO_A_FOLDER
alarmprogram:
SET BACKUPLOGS=Y
set BACKUP_CMD=ontape -a -d
The llog backup is workin as expected, but old llog backups are not removed from the disk.
I do a full backup with
ontape -s -L 0every night but i still have 10 days old logical log backups on the disk.
Am i missing something or is there a new way to setup the retention of the llog backup?
Thank you guys.
Joe

Joe:
The best way to manage cleaning up older logical log backup files is to do that as part of the archive processing when you are using ontape since ontape never did that for you (your storage manager will take care of that if you are using onbar). You need to keep all of the logical log backups made after the oldest full archive that you are keeping around in case a later archive becomes corrupted and you have to restore and roll forward from an older one. Therefore, it makes sense that the archive cron script (or whatever) takes care of aging out log backups older than that oldest retained archive.

Ontape programs are not smart enough
You cannot automatically delete previous logical log backups after ontape backups are completed

You are correct, ontape cannot delete old log backups, but your archive script that launches ontape, either for the server archive or log backup, can, once the archive completes, delete any older log backups as well as older archives. I think that is what Josef is referring to.
