Octav, starting with 7.2, connectivity products and server support reading and writing UTF-8 characters. If you need Unicode right now you would have to convert from UTF-8 to Unicode on the application level. Setting CLIENT_LOCALE and DB_LOCALE to (e.g.) en_us.utf8 should work to create a UTF-8 database and manipulate UTF-8 character data.
