Yes, you can use similar syntax for Informix to the UNION clause you demonstrated, but you must specify a table. I am not certain if you can get away without it in SQL Server. If you just want one row, the most common trick seems to be to select from the systables system catalogue: SELECT Field1 as ValueField ,Field2 as DescField FROM TableA UNION SELECT Null as ValueField ,'All' as DescField FROM systables WHERE tabid = 1 The last line is the one I added to your example.
