reuse raw device
Posted in 2009
A user moved a raw disk holding IDS 11.5 data from machine A to machine B and found the new instance couldn't see the databases, though oncheck -pe showed them. Replies explained that concurrent sharing requires SDS, but for a physical move you must shut down A cleanly (onmode -ky, or -c BLOCK if copying), copy A's ONCONFIG to B, add the DBSERVERNAME/aliases to B's sqlhosts, then start B. The poster's error was that ROOTPATH still pointed to a local cooked file; fixing that made it work. Cross-platform/endian moves were said to be unsupported (root dbspace page size is fixed at 2K, 4K on AIX/Windows).

Hi all,
thanks for attention :).
I have used one disk as raw device on one machine(machine A) with INFORMIX
DS EE 11.5, and there is data in that disk.
Then I plug this disk to another machine(machine B) with INFORMIX EE 11.5
too.
But the IDS on machine B can not access databases that I created on machine
A.
However, when I execute "oncheck -pe" on machine B, I can see databases I
created on machine A. This means that the IDS on machine B can recognize the
raw device and data in raw device.
How can I access these data in the raw device?
thanks! bow :)

Did you configure the instance on machine B as an SDS Secondary? That is
the ONLY way that IDS will share disks between two servers. See the
Administrator's Guide.

Hi,
Your objective here is not clear. Are you attempting to have both instances
use the same disk and both be up and operating against the disk? If so you
must use the SDS ( ? ) option of 11.50 .
If you are wishing to do it withour the support of IBM you should go do an
oncheck -pe ( or -cr or -cc depending on what the disk you added was) on the"A" instance. There you will see that there are issues with the chunkfree page
of the disk , and possibly the TBLSPACE TBLSPACE or what ever other stuff you
overwrote when you added the disk to the second instance.
Remeber "last in wins" on disk writes and without the SDDS software the two
instances can not see all the work that is happening in the bufferes of the
other system. Nor can they see things like "locks" "transactions"
"checkpoints" and many other important occurences on the engine.

Hi,
I did not configure the instance on machine B as an SDS Secondary. These two
machines are independent from each other. Like this, I used IDS on machine A
to mange my data on the disk, then I take this disk to machine B. The IDS on
machine B of the same version is just newly installed without any user data.
How can the IDS on machine B manage data in that raw disk like on machine A?
Is threre any interface through which I can make this work just in a few
seconds? And is SDS the only way?
thank you very much! :)

As long as the onconfig files and links to the devices match and the IDS
versions are identical (same version, same OS), you should be able to do what
you want to accomplish. Other than that, your sqlhosts file on the second
machine must have the same IDS server names in it as the first, except that
the second one should point its info to the second server instead of the first:
On the first box:
My_server_shared_mem onipcshm server1 fake_serviceMy_server_ip onsoctcp server1 sqlexec (or whatever your IDS service is called)
Box 2:
My_server_shared_mem onipcshm server2 fake_serviceMy_server_ip onsoctcp server2 sqlexec (or whatever your IDS service is called)
It looks like you have already got part of this done since oncheck works. What
happens when you execute oninit on the second box?

OK, wait, to be clear: You are note trying to share the disk drive between
the two instances simultaneously but are trying to detach the disk from
machine A and then attach it to machine B and bring the engine there online
or to take a copy of the raw partitions on the drive on A and bring that
copy up on B? Is that it?
If it is, you have to have done all of the following:
- Bring the instance on A offline using onmode -ky to sync all memory
changes back to disk so that the image on the disk is consistent. (If you
are only copying the disk from A to B not moving the connection to the
drive(s) you can just use onmode -c BLOCK instead of bringing the engine
offline to accomplish te sync to disk.)
- Detach the disk from machine A and attach it to machine B (whether this
is a physical move or a logical attachment doesn't matter) or copy the data
from the raw partition on A to theone on B. If a copy operation under
onmode -c BLOCK use onmode -c UNBLOCK to release the instance on A for
continued use.
- Have a copy of the ONCONFIG file from machine A available in the
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/ directory on machine B.
- Modify the sqlhosts file on machine B to include the server names
listed in DBSERVERNAME and DBSERVERALIASES
- Start the instance on B.

Hi,
thanks u all. thanks very much :)
Yes. I detach the disk from machine A and attach it to machine B.
But I had made a mistake so that it did not work.
At first, the IDS instance on machine A has a ROOTPATH on A, pointing to a
cooked file in A's file system, not pointing to the raw disk.
So did the instance on machine B. When I execute "oninit" on machine B, it
worked, but it cannot access the data in the raw disk. because the system
databases did not contain information of the data in raw disk.
ofcoz it did not work..... after I changed this, it worked as I wish.
But, if the OS on both machine are different form each other, like one Linux
another AIX or MSWindows. Even this two machine have different
architecture,like X86, X64, IA64,SPARC.etc Can this still work?

No. That will not work except accidentally. Certainly it is officially un=

Hi,
the endian problem is clear, but the OS problem is not.
When we use raw device, there is nothing to do with filesystem. Our
read/write operation on the raw disk is done by IDS itself.
So in IDS 11.5, the page size of new dbspace is configurable when it is
created. But how to configure the page size of the dbspace in ROOTPATH?
if the page size of dbspaces are of the same, including dbspace in ROOTPATH,
Can that work?
Is there any other difference of IDS on different OS?
thanks :)

The ROOTPATH pagesize is fixed per platform. On Windows and on AIX the
rootdbs pagesize is 4K on every other platform the rootdbs pagesize is 2K.
You CANNOT modify the pagesize of the rootdbs.

As said it works under certain conditions and - to my knowledge - has been done successfully before ( RELIANT to SOLARIS if I recall it correctly ) You would have to take care of locales - if its a legacy system and there are databases that got created with OS locales you might run into all kinds of troubles - if the locales on one platform are somewhat different from the source platform. This is one caveat to be aware of. Others might be there. As for ROOTPATH - you don't configure any critical dbspace for larger pagesize, that#s fixed to 2 k (4K on AIX and Windows) But again for the reason that it is not supported - don't do it. HTH Tilman
