Re: Merry Christmas & Happy new year -- off-topic indeed!

I guess I don't see your point. Since some months of the year are named after Roman and Greek gods, and days of the week same, I can't get away from such influences in my life. Even saying 'Good luck' has influences from other religions if I remember right. I would prefer to celebrate Christmas some other time of year, but that is not when the majority of those of my faith celebrate it. I am saying that the spirit of something is what matters, the intent, the goal. In this case, we celebrate the birth of Christ and it really doesn't matter what day we celebrate it on. I guess I don't see it as a lie, because I do believe Jesus was born and that he made a difference in the world and that he still makes a difference in people's lives. That is a really good thing. Somewhere along the way, as nations and people in Europe started to believe in Christ, they just came to see their traditions as meaning something else. I think that was more likely to happen, than they give up the things they enjoy. I don't think it would be very easy to get rid of Halloween for example. Some Christians think that is a very strange 'holiday'. Some Christians probably don't mind it at all. But it probably won't go away, so many churches use it as a time of fun for the kids and a time to get people together even though they may not participate in many of the weirdnesses of Halloween. So someday, Halloween may be a totally different 'holiday' because people want it to be. I don't know how much longer I can participate in this topic. I have a deeper concern though, and it's just as applicable to Christmas as it is to Kwanzaa: is it right to validate yourself with a lie? -- Bye now, Obnoxio "C'est pas parce qu'on n'a rien à dire qu'il faut fermer sa gueule" - Coluche did i mention i like nulls? heck, i even go so far as to say that all columns in a table except the primary key could/should be nullable. this has certain advantages, for example, if you need to insert a child record and you don't have a parent row for it, just do an insert into the parent table with the primary key value (everything else null), and voila, relational integrity is preserved. but this is, admittedly, a bit controversial among modellers. --r937, dbforums.com
