Problem: ** WARNING: Network Down **--On-Line -- Advice Please
Posted in 1999

I have got a big problem, (at least to me) our sys-admin rebooted our
Solaris 2.6 box yesterday and ever
since, I can't seem to get informix up on the network. In onmonitor, it
shows what is in the subject of this
message. The tail of the log file is below:
07:46:24 On-Line Mode
07:46:24 Checkpoint Completed: duration was 0 seconds.
07:46:34 listener-thread: err = -951: oserr = 0: errstr = informix:Incorrect password or user informix is not known on the database server.
Nothing has changed on the system except for the reboot. I have verified
that informix user is still there and
that the password has not changed.
Can anyone out there offer any advice?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Paul,
I have had the same problem with my server a while ago ...
In order to resolve the issue be sure of a few things ...
1. Your machine is on the network and is capable of pinging other machines
including yourself (if using onsoctcp or ontlitcp connections ... it
obviously does not apply for shared memory connections)
2. Try changing the password for informix to the same password...
re-authenticate the user database... is what was told to me to be absolutely
sure that the password is ok. If possible be user root if you can ...
although it doesn't really matter.
3. Also, if you supply a name in your sqlhosts file ... be sure that your
internal DNS server if you have one is running fine ... I have found for
some reason that not having the internal DNS resolve the name of my computer
to an IP created this error as well ... although there was an entry (and has
to be) in my /etc/hosts file. Try changing the name to the actual IP if you
can.
I am sure that nothing was changed and it may just be that you were not
authenticated properly before logging in. I have had this happen a few
times on solaris boxes. Just try logging in again ... which I am sure you
probably tried.
If you have still have problems ... just as a test check to see what happens
when changing the sqlhosts file to 127.0.0.1 does ... I have found when
doing this test before anything (if you change this value ... you will need
to restart the engine) gave me some insights as to where the problem was
coming from (if it was a network problem).
That's about as much advice as I can give. If you still have problems ...
try contacting informix to let then know of your situation ... hopefully
they can help .. or I am sure someone else in the list could.

The **Warning: Network Down** message is usually seen when there is a
mis-match between the sqlhosts file and the dbservername/dbserveralias
entries in the onconfig file. All entries that are in
dbservername/dbserveralias must be in sqlhosts.

Thanks for all of you who responded to this message. The problem was in
fact due to our sys admin
"cleaning" things up. Basically, he did a chown -R informix:informix in the
informix home directory. This
caused some of the binaries in the bin directory to be owned by informix
instead of root. Since informix
itself needs access to /etc/shadow, it was failing. I reran RUN_AS_ROOT.ius
as root to fix everything
back up. Thanks to Brandon Haight of informix support who led me to this.
