displaying substring in a form, can I ??

hi INFORMIX'ers I can't displat substring in a form f01=table.column[2,10]; instructions screen record screen-rcd [4] (table.column) giving me error no -2950 or, screen record scr_rcd [4] (table.column[2,10]) giving me error no -2018 any hints.... many thanks in advance...
