Are you running the ontape -a in the background or from a dedicated
terminal. Does ontape -a ever come back to the prompt???
The ontape -a should go away. Check the permissions on ontape, oninit.
And you could run ontape -a through truss to give you additional information.

Hi Informix Gurus,
we're using Informix Online 7.23 on a cluster Solaris 2.6
We're using ontape -a to backup logical logs into a local disk file.
Logical logs are cleaned but ontape -a process remains as root.
As the process never die, during the next backup we have the following message
"logical backup is already in progress"
The only way to go on is to kill -9 the past ontape.
Could anyone help us ?
Best regards

Have you considered an ontape -c for continuous log log backups? As a
log log is filled and closed, it's immediately backed up to tape.

How are you running the ontape -a? From a script? In the background?
I have seen this behavior when ontape is prompting, as it does for
another tape change or to ask if you want to back up the current log.
try adding an additional newline to your here-script.
If you are executing the ontape -a from the ALARMPROGRAM script you may
want to get my eventalarm.c program instead. It handles the log
complete alarm message as well as all others emailing messages to
administrators or their beepers on critical events and it executes
ontape -a when a log fills and renames the file preparing for the nextlog and optionally compresses the logfile. Eventalarm is contained
in the package utils3_ak I have submitted to the IIUG Software
Repository. The program is easily configurable for your needs and
includes such niceties as ignoring repeated messages of the same class
and severity (like the hundreds of Lock Table Overflow messages that
one can see) and only alerting the admins periodically (like hourly) if
a condition recurs or persists.
