IDS 7.31.UC5 AIX 4.3.3.0 Around 70gig of data and 500 tables 75 dbspaces. I just added a dev instance on my test machine and I have been trying to populate the new instance from an existing instance on the same machine. Ontape -r does not work since my rootdbs is different then the other instance on the same machine. DBexport just runs way to long. Onunload looks like it will require an entry for every table/space since it will put everything in rootdbs if you let it default. Does anyone have any quick/easy tool to accomplish a restore to a dev instance from a similar instance on the same machine? Setting up an unload/load by table appears to be the only way that I have found that works. Any help is appreciated
Hi, you might check out the High Performance Loader (HPL). It has its own manual: "High-Peformance Loader User's Guide". As it is quite powerful, it may not be "easy" in the sense of "simple", but at least it should be quick ... BTW: Newer versions of IDS (>= 9.40) have a feature called "Chunk Rename During Restore" which seems what you originally looked for. Upgrade to 9.40 and take advantage of the cross instance restore by
using
"ontape -r rename -f <filename>" where filename is a file containing a
list of new devices to restore. Your new instance onconfig file will
contain the same rootdbs space of the source database and the <filename>
will contain the new path to the new instance rootdbs.
example of <filename>
old path offset new path offset
/dev/informix/rootdbs 0 /dev/informix/dev_inst/rootdbs 0
/dev/informix/phys_log 0 /dev/informix/dev_inst/phys_log 0
/dev/informix/log_dbs 0 /dev/informix/dev_inst/log_dbs 0
/dev/informix/mixed11_3 0 /dev/informix/dev_inst/mixed11_3 0

IDS 7.31.UC5
AIX 4.3.3.0
Around 70gig of data and 500 tables 75 dbspaces.
I just added a dev instance on my test machine and I have been trying to
populate the new instance from an existing instance on the same machine.
Ontape -r does not work since my rootdbs is different then the other
instance on the same machine.
DBexport just runs way to long.
Onunload looks like it will require an entry for every table/space since it
will put everything in rootdbs if you let it default.
Does anyone have any quick/easy tool to accomplish a restore to a dev
instance from a similar instance on the same machine?
Setting up an unload/load by table appears to be the only way that I have
found that works.
Any help is appreciated
If you
have the flexibility in the dev instance, why don't you reconfigure the
rootdbs in the dev instance to match with the other instance that you are
trying to restore from ?
If you have no choice then load/unload of tables probably is the only way. To
make it faster you can turn off logging and use PDQ.
Take advantage of the Informix dynamic cpu allocation method to make it faster
while loading the tables. If you have 4 physcial CPUs in the box then add 1-2
more CPUvps using onmode command and watch your loading fly !!!
Another loading method would be to use HPL and that is High Performance Loader
which I am not very familiar about, but those who are familiar say it is very
fast.
You can also use dbload utility. In fact HPL is nothing but a pretty wrap
around of Informix dbload utility.
Hope this help.
