We (Informix) develop database applications in I4GL; I use several I4GL applications daily. We do not develop I4GL in I4GL because I4GL is not a general purpose language in the same way that C is general purpose language. Specifically, there are a number of features which are not available in I4GL which would be required to make compiler writing in I4GL plausible. We can start with file system i/o; a compiler needs to be able to read source files and to write object files, but I4GL does not have the facilities built in to handle that. And, I repeat, these are my opinions -- they are not Informix's corporate opinions.
