RE: IIUG - Q&A to IBM

I saw Jerry's response. How much money do you want to spend? If you ever saw the movie "Thank you for Smoking", there was a subplot of paying movie directors to add smoking, even a special brand. See the conversation between Rob Lowe's character and the main character. Its very easy to get product placement in TV shows and you could do something funny like in 'The Colbert Report'. Unfortunately, you're attempting to take a very tech oriented product where the masses have no clue what it is. There's a thing called the Q Rating. Its an indicator of how well a product's brand name is recognized. The higher the Q Rating, the more known the brand is. IBM has a high Q Rating. DB2 much less because IBM focuses on the brand IBM and not on a subBrand like DB or Information Management. Oracle has a higher Q rating because Oracle is tied to its flamboyant Larry Ellison. Informix? Not so much. So if you're going to do any 'marketing' you need to recognize your target audience and then plan appropriately. An example... In Avatar, they could have sat in front of the computer screen talking about the data stored in IBMs' Informix Data warehouse as being the latest state of the art technology. Then you're putting the plug in to a context that a computer geek would catch and others wouldn't notice it. But getting back to IBM and marketing. IBM doesn't market or focus on brand recognition on specific products. The interesting thing is that Websphere is both the brand and the series of products. So you will see some Websphere marketing. IBM does this because by making IBM a more recognized brand, anything under that umbrella is going to benefit due to the belief that customers see IBM and a brand they can trust so IBM DB2 must be good. ;-) But here's something you should consider. Spending a million dollars to do a print campaign (which isnt a lot of money) would go further if you invested that money in to some visible R&D program at a University. Neither which is going to happen any time soon. Jerry K knows this and I've had communication with him on this over the past 4 years. Its only now that they are starting to look at benchmarks... ;-) You want something done, either you pay for it, or you get a big sledge hammer to knock some sense in to them. So, I don't really expected any answer of IBM... my question is something like "just for fun" , can be a good idea like Jerry said, but with low probability to happen, because this is not like IBM operates and for other most obvious reason... there is some Superman movie to incoming?? If not.. maybe they can use the Smallvile soap operas ,,, Well, keep the subject in the "funny area" , I received a answer from Gary with a excellent phrase, Gary, I hope your don't mind if I copy here: Superman colors are a perfect match but it is easier to ask the film drector to have Superman say in the movie "I am fast but Informix is faster" then to get IBM to advertise Informix. If some day IBM do something like this...any reward for give the idea will welcome!!! :) César --- Em qua, 28/4/10, Ian Michael Gumby <im_gumby@hotmail.com> escreveu: De: Ian Michael Gumby <im_gumby@hotmail.com> Assunto: RE: IIUG - Q&A to IBM Para: cesar_inacio_martins@yahoo.com.br, informix-list@iiug.org Data: Quarta-feira, 28 de Abril de 2010, 16:48 Cesar, Here's the short answer... IBM only markets the IBM brand and not the specific products. So if you were to do a marketing tie in to Superman, it would be to sell IBM's Global Services or as a complete solutions provider and not a SWG product. You don't have to take my word for it, but I doubt you'll get an official response from IBM ;-) -G Date: Wed, 28 Apr 2010 10:54:05 -0700 From: cesar_inacio_martins@yahoo.com.br Subject: IIUG - Q&A to IBM To: informix-list@iiug.org Hi, In the Q&A I send a question to Gary ask in they "Gary Talk Show" to IBM executives, but they don't have time to do.... So, here is: Incoming to IIUG event from Brazil, in Newark airport I watch on TV the movie trailer Ironman 2 with advertising by Oracle/Sun. Check here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y56CbCpXohk When IBM will do the same with Informix and Superman movie?? Both are faster, reliable and the color of uniform of superman match with Informix Logo !!! César The New Busy think 9 to 5 is a cute idea. Combine multiple calendars with Hotmail.
