informix server issue

I can't seem to connect to an informix online v5.x database using jdbc1.5 I have jdk 1.1.7 The path and classpath are set. It gives me error -908 I am on the same machine as the database server. (client and server on same machine) TBCONFIG and INFORMIXDIR are already set. I can connect to the database outside java. Any suggestions?
