Postings appearing to come from rmy.emory.edu
Posted in 1996
There have been several recent instances when a poster's address was listed incorrectly as belonging to the rmy.emory.edu domain. This can happen when an incoming news article or e-mail message lists only a (perhaps fictitious) user name as the originating address. The short explanation is that it's sendmail's fault on outgoing mail, and my fault on outgoing news. Both sendmail and the gateway software tacitly assume that an address that appears to be local really is. If/when I get the chance [raucous laughter in the background], I'll see if I can add some code that attempts to tell a good local address from a fake one and flags bad off-site addresses in some obvious way. In the meantime, if you see an obnoxious message that appears to be from the rmy.emory.edu domain, it's probably an error of the type described above. We don't allow obnoxious people on our system. :-) Walt. -- Walt Hultgren Internet: walt@rmy.emory.edu (IP 170.140.97.4) Emory University UUCP: {...,gatech,rutgers,uunet}!emory!rmy!walt 954 Gatewood Road, NE BITNET: walt@EMORY Atlanta, GA 30329 USA Voice: +1 404 727 0648
