Restore life database backup to testing database

Dear Sir, Our informix Online Engine is version 5.0 and using raw disk device. We try to restore our life database backup to testing database so as to fix a program bug. When restore start, the online engine restore the backup to life database again since the system restore according to the parameter on the tape. Is that possible to restore life backup to testing database? We certainly hope that it is not necessary to shutdown the life database engine... Thank for your attention.
