DYNAMIC_LOGS in ONCONFIG
Posted in 2009
A DBA asked whether DYNAMIC_LOGS could be used on IDS 10 (HP-UX) so a developer's large table move wouldn't hit long-transaction limits, and where the added logs would live. Answers: dynamically added logical logs are created in ROOTDBS (not /tmp) and are permanent — they survive restarts and must be dropped manually with onparams. Others suggested setting DYNAMIC_LOGS to 1 so the DBA is prompted to add logs, treating it as a last resort, and recommended switching the table to RAW mode during the move (then back to STANDARD with a level 0 backup) to avoid logging altogether.

Good afternoon, We occasionally have a programmer than needs a large amount of log space to move a very large table. Instead of fiddling with the HTXHWM and LTXEHWM in the ONCONFIG file, has anyone successfully setup DYNAMIC_LOGS with IDS 10.00 on HPUX? Where would the dynamic logs go to? /tmp ? Thank-you Art. Last question... are these permanent logical logs? Or temporary? Do the dynamically added logical logs go away after a reboot? Jonathan B. No, they are permanent. You will have to drop them manually with onparams
if they are no longer needed or you want to replace then with other logs in
a different dbspace.

Dynamically added logs are permanent and won't go away unless you delete
them.

How about having your programmer set the table(s) in question to mode
raw before he moves the data and set it back to standard afterward?
That way you avoid the whole log issue entirely. You just would want to
make a level 0 backup after the tables are set back to standard.

My recommendation is to have DYNAMIC_LOGS enabled set to 1 (let
administrator interact and add logical logs as needed.)
Nevertheless , this shoud be a last resort . a Long transaction is a bug
in your application that needs get fixed.
However, I guess the solution to your developers problem is using raw
