I think there is a case to be made for improving the installation model.
The current model originated when the engine was bundled with ISQL or I4GL;
there wasn't any OnLine product, and SE didn't exist as an identifiable
product.
However, I posted a month or two ago the tools necessary to allow you to
install new Tools products without overwriting the Engines. It isn't a
direct installation, but you can't get everything via the back door...
I posted ixremove, ixcreate, cpinfxdir, etc. If I was faced with the
existing installation:
/usr/informix/7.13.UC1
OnLine 7.13.UC1
ESQL/C 7.13.UC1
I4GL 6.03.UC1
I4GL-RDS 6.03.UC1
I4GL-ID 6.03.UC1
ISQL 6.03.UC1
and if I then got a new distribution of ISQL and I4GL (6.04.UC1), then what
I would do is (in outline):
* create a temporary directory for the new software
* install the new software in the temporary directory
* uninstall the old software from the existing, main INFORMIXDIR
* selectively copy the new software to the main INFORMIXDIR
* unselectively delete whatever is left in the temporary directory
In fairly complete detail:
su root
mkdir /usr/informix/6.04.UC1
cd /usr/informix/6.04.UC1
export INFORMIXDIR=$PWD # Korn Shell! # Use INFORMIXDIR=`pwd`; export INFORMIXDIR in Bourne Shell,
# and change to Korn Shell if you use C Shell.
tar xvf /dev/rmt/0m # Or whatever...
# NB: the keys I'm using aren't valid.
./installsql <<!
ABC#D123456
ZZZZZZ
!
tar xvf /dev/rmt/0m
./install4gl <<!
ABC#D123457
ZZZZZA
!
# Repeat for I4GL-RDS (install4gp) and I4GL-ID (install4db)
# Check what will be removed from the main INFORMIXDIR
TOOLSFILES="-F fglfiles -F fgpfiles -F sqlfiles -F fgldbfiles"
ixremove -I /usr/informix/7.13.UC1 -vn $TOOLSFILES
# Remove it
ixremove -I /usr/informix/7.13.UC1 $TOOLSFILES
# Selectively copy the new software into the main INFORMIXDIR
# -c = copy (not symlink)
# -d = include demo software
# -v = verbose
ixcreate -cdv -R /usr/informix/6.04.UC1 -L /usr/informix/7.13.UC1 $TOOLSFILES
# Unselectively clean up the temporary directory
cd /
rm -fr /usr/informix/6.04.UC1
The only other thing you'd have to check on is that any symlinks in
/usr/lib which pointed to /usr/informix/6.04.UC1 were remade point to
/usr/informix/7.13.UC1.
