(And no, > going back is not an option at this point.) There's a known bug for 7.30.FC6 and below on HP-UX 11 (Bug 93580) that fits this description perfectly. It doesn't apply to the 32- bit ports, but the culprit probably applies here -- KAIO. You may want to disable it (I'm assuming you have it enabled) and see if that fixes the problem.
