About serial type

Hi all, Using serial type is a good way to assign an unique key to any table and simplify the selects and joins. But when there are more than one machine and you have to transfer information between them, there is a problem: Every machine has the same tables but their own serial numbers, so, the use of serial is not valid in this case. Even initializing the serial field to different numerations for every table and machine could be a problem: it's only an integer field. What to do in this case ? What about "replication" ?
