Upgrading to 7.22 or better

I also have Online 7.22 and would like to upgrade to it. How difficult is this to do? What do I need to watch out for? I need to do this on a production machine, so how much downtime can I expect? Is there a newer version that I should be upgrading to that does not require an upgrade fee? If so, how do I get it?
