problem with esql

I installed informix SE on Linux (slackware, linux 2.0.30), and installed the demo database. dbaccess runs well, but I was unable to user the preprocessor for any of the *.ec programs. For example, the first example in the ESQL/C manual says to use the following command: esql -o demo1 demo1.ec. It gave the following error: unknown error message 33000. I tried other parameters with esql, such as -e, -ansi, etc, but they all give the same error. Any insight will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris
