DBSPACETEMP Parameter
Posted in 2016
Question: does the DBSPACETEMP onconfig parameter create temporary dbspaces automatically? Answer from several respondents: no — DBSPACETEMP is only a list of already-existing dbspaces; you must create them yourself with onspaces, using -t to flag them as temp spaces (otherwise unlogged temp tables land in rootdbs). Tips given: separate entries with colons (not spaces, since onconfig is space-delimited), consider including one regular dbspace for logged temp tables, and note the setting can also be overridden per session via SET ENVIRONMENT or a client variable; one poster said a restart is needed, another that onmode -wf/-wm works from 11.70. The original poster confirmed the answers helped.

Hi,
The DBSPACETEMP Parameter in onconfig file create automatically the temporally
dbspaces ? Or
They must be created with onspaces utility.
Thanks in advance.
The dbspaces must already exist, DBSPACETEMP is only the list of dbspaces
to be used.

Be sure to mark the new dbspaces you create for your DBSPACETEMP list as TEMP
space. Otherwise the engine will still create unlogged temp tables in your
rootdbs. I always have a regular dbspace in the list as well, just in case a
logged temp table is created inadvertently.

Hi,
the Informix cannot create the TMPDBS from the list, because the location and
size are not declared here.
You have to create the dbspaces with onspaces and the -t flag to indicate a
temp usage.
After doing that, you have to list (colon separated) the dbspaces in the
onconfig.
Keep in mind, Informix only reads the parameters when starting, meaning you
have to bounce the engine
to make use of the temp spaces (same if you add one to an existing list, I
dont think it would
work with onmode -wf).
Our admins have been failing with a wrong entry in the past, the list was only
separated by spaces,
which did not work.

I believe that since 11.70 it's possible to change it without bouncing the
engine using onmode - wf and even onmode - wm.
The onconfig is read in columns, the first one is the name and the second
the parameters of the configuration, being space used as the delimiter.
Hence, never use a space on parameters.

They must be created manually independent of DBSPACETEMP.

To set this a bit more into perspective:
think of DBSPACETEMP onconfig param as the server wide default setting for =
which set out of your existing dbspaces to use for temp partition=20
activity, and for a setting that can be chosen dynamically on session=20
level, query by query using SET ENVIRONMENT SQL command if you wish so,=20
with a client environment variable to set client default.
